Academic Writing
Module Description
This module aims to introduce learners to academic writing and to help them obtain good standards of academic writing which they can use throughout the modules, the various writing which they are expected to work on and ultimately, to write their dissertation. The module is also intended to support learners with various opportunities to understand the importance of, as well as, use various tools and resources which help academic writing.
During the module, learners will be given opportunities to explore various academic literature sources such as books, journals, and other robust sources. Discussions about how to identify robust sources are also expected to happen during this module. Learners will also engage in discussions on how to choose: i) books, ii) journals (what is their indexing and how do these journals currently rank within their respective fields) and iii) journal articles (peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed). Discussions about weak sources of literature and weak academic writing approaches must be also explored during this module, so students learn how to approach by practical examples.
Learners will also be equipped with skills on how to approach literature and how to navigate online libraries and repositories. They will be shown how to use key strings and key terms to conduct searches for literature and how to manage the effective use of tools (e.g. Mendeley) to help with these literature searches. They will also be shown how to filter academic literature while understanding and conceptualising which filters are being used, depending on what they want to find out.

How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Lectures per module depending on the number of ECTS (once or twice a week);
- 3-hour lectures;
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos;
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.
