Tourism Business Management
Module Description
This module comprises of 3 major areas in tourism management: Finance, Human Resources (HR), and Operations.
In relation to finance, learners will gain knowledge on the role and function of financial management in the travel and tourism sector. Learners will familiarise themselves with financial statements and their purpose as well as assessing the nature of costs. In addition, learners will become familiar with the time value of money. Learners will gain knowledge on capital structure and comprehend the relationship between profit and cash flow and the interpretation of the cash flow statement with respect to the tourism industry.
The second part of this module will focus on Human Resource Management in Tourism. Learners will be provided with the ability to select and apply appropriate human resources skills and knowledge within the travel and tourism industry. The module tackles the roles and functions of HR and the principal theories of human resource management. Furthermore, the module will equip students with knowledge regarding the importance of emotional intelligence and the use of technology in human resource management.
The final and third part of this module will look at Operations Management within the travel and tourism industry. Learners will explore the key concerns related to operations management as well as becoming familiar with the main operations function in travel and tourism. Students will appreciate the importance of planning and control within operations management as well as having the opportunity to evaluate the performance objectives of this department within the travel and tourism sector, ensuring its overall success. This module also covers other important processes within operations management such as capacity planning and control, inventory planning and control, and the supply chain and control.

How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Lectures per module depending on the number of ECTS (once or twice a week);
- 3-hour lectures;
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos;
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.
