Construction Project Management
Module Description
This module will equip members of a construction project team or team leaders with the essential skills and techniques required to run successful projects from concept to commissioning and handing-over.
Studying this course will help instill essential skills enabling the learner to effectively manage projects in construction business settings.
Today construction businesses must employ effective project management techniques in order to succeed in the market place. This is in light of the level of competition in the industry, complexity of project, financial and regulatory constraints.
It is therefore essential that managers who wish to successfully manage construction project, are fully competent in the application of project management skills in a challenging working environment.
The aim of this course is to show potential construction managers how to lead a project team, control and co-ordinate activities as to finish the projects to required quality, in time and with the right budget.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course must possess one of the following:
- a Level 6 degree in a related field;
OR
- a Level 5 diploma or higher diploma and 5 years’ work experience in a managerial role.
Preference is given to applicants having a Level 6 degree in a discipline related to construction, and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in management within the industry.
Target Audience
This course is targeted at professionals with supervisory and/or middle management experience in the construction industry who wish to have a more thorough background in the subject in order to further advance their careers , namely:
- Architects and Civil Engineers
- Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Engineers
- Project Managers and Coordinators
- Project Owners
The target group can be extended to groups working within the construction industry, such as logistics managers, maintenance managers and facilities managers.
Module / Unit Instructions
The proposed structure comprises a blended approach promoting the building of a community of practice via peer-to-peer learning.
The structure uses primarily two dimensions of teaching-learning modes:
- Face-to-face sessions: 18 hours.
- Online Learning Activities: 12 hours.
Face to Face sessions
- Face-to-face sessions include lectures, tutorials, discussions, presentations and workshop activities promoting peer-to-peer learning.
Online Learning Activities
Online learning activities incorporate tutorials and asynchronous discussions. These may consist of active interaction, participation and contributions in fora discussions, sharing resources and self-reflection exercises.
Learners also contribute to the building of the community of practice by providing feedback to their peers as critical friends, enhancing the learner’s critical engagement throughout the study period.
The tutor provides continual support during both teaching -learning modes by providing information, readings and tasks relevant to the module in question.
The tutor provides continuous formative feedback as an on-going guidance during the student’s learning experience in preparation for their summative assessment.
How you’ll be assessed
Assessment of each module consists of two assignments, each carrying a weighting as below:
a) One Formative assignment carries 20% of total module mark achieved. b) One Summative assignment carries 80% of total module mark achieved.
For successful completion of a study module the student is required to achieve a minimum of 41% pass mark in both the formative and the summative assignment.
The overall grade achieved for each module is calculated as the sum of: · 20% of the mark achieved for formative assignment; and · 80% of the mark achieved for the summative assignment.
All assignment tasks of both formative and summative assessment aim to provide the learner an opportunity to produce evidence of his/her competences aligned to the learning outcomes of each individual Module.
Assessment
a) Formative assessment tasks are provided in the form of structured online discussions that support learners in their development throughout all of the modules studied.
Such discussions are facilitated and monitored by lecturer who provides students with constructive feedback to help them improve and prepare for summative assignment and dissertation.
Formative assessment tasks will contribute to the student’s final mark to acknowledge their work and give chance to improve.
This method allows students to also contribute to the building of the community of practice by providing feedback to their peers as critical friends, enhancing the learner’s critical engagement throughout the study period
b) Summative assessment is done via one assignment at the end of each module.
The mode of assessment varies and may include in-class assignments, and home-based written assignments. The recommended assessment tool for this module is essay title. Other assessment tools which may be used are case studies and reports.
Word count range: 3000 ± 10%. For successful completion of a study module the student is required to achieve a minimum of 41% pass mark in summative assignment.

Learning Outcomes
Competences:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the ability to, independently:
- Critically appraise and apply relevant Project Management tools and techniques to administer and manage projects in construction settings.
- Set a project organisation having all the necessary resources and competencies necessary to successfully execute construction projects including small build projects, public/PPP infrastructure or building construction projects, international and high-rise projects.
- In context of construction management, critically analyse and synthesise information to develop, seek approval for, and communicate a project plan addressing project scope, targets, objectives, and including milestones, tasks, responsibilities and time frames using the appropriate software and tools.
- Critically analyse information to build a communication plan to disseminate information relating to the project itself, as well as project tasks, responsibilities and deadlines to relevant stakeholders.
- Carry out project risk assessments and develop and implement a plan for controlling risk ranging from public reaction, site conditions, buildability, health and safety issues, financial and impact of weather.
- In context of construction settings, critically evaluate and manage resources such as labour, materials, tools and budgets in order to minimise losses which can be mitigated through effective project management.
- Critically anticipate, assess and manage potential impacts on internal and external stakeholder in construction settings.

- Critically analyse, evaluate, appraise and synthesise methods, processes, tools and techniques for managing projects in construction settings as they relate to the following content.
- Five Functions of Project Management.
- Project Management Proces.
- The Work Breakdown Structure.
- the Responsibility Chart § the Milestone Plan.
- Mind Mapping as a tool in Project Management.
- managing Resources in PM § Managing Quality, Costs and Time.
- The methods of estimating activity duration.
- Evaluation of a project from a Budgeting, Organizational, Management and Planning and Implementation perspective (case study).
- The Reporting, Record Keeping and Documentation Control System for the project.
Skills:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Applying knowledge and understanding.
- Critically apply the five functions of project management (Plan, Organize, Implement, Control and Lead) when working on the project in construction settings context.
- Critically evaluate and apply appropriate software tools and techniques to schedule and track tasks and the following: Scope, Budget, Quality, Risks.
- In context of construction related projects, critically apply the work breakdown structure to give a clear description of project activities to relevant resources, team members and stakeholders.
- In context of construction related projects, critically apply tools such as Gantt Charts and PERT Charts to monitor project progress.
- Critically apply tools such as a Total Quality Plan to monitor and manage construction related projects and their quality.
- Critically apply tools such as project cost estimates throughout the phases of a project to control and manage costs in context of construction related projects.
Judgment Skills and Critical Abilities:
This section has been made sufficiently open to accommodate both vocational and academic orientations. Applicants can refer to Judgement Skills, or Critical Abilities (critical skills, dispositions, values and actions), or both.
The learner will be able to:
- Critically analyse effectiveness of own project methodology used so far in construction settings.
- Critically interpret an action plan based on risk assessments for construction organisations.
