Module Description

The aim of this module is to convey the underlying and enduring concepts common to all computer systems. This is in order to emphasise the ways that these concepts influence the performance and correctness of application software. Following this module, the students will be in a position to develop better applications, by utilising their knowledge of computer systems architectures.

With the recent developments in virtualisation and cloud computing, software can be developed with a minimal understanding of hardware; however, for developing good software that is both reliable and efficient, a good understanding of hardware is of paramount importance. Moreover, as part of the first stages of the software engineering process, the hardware understanding becomes critical.

Specifically, this module will delve into data representation, hardware architectures, followed by the main hardware components of computer systems being the processor, memory, and storage.
