Course Description

This award fosters the development of proficient English communication skills, applicable to both professional and personal domains.

It provides a comprehensive exploration of the four language competencies – speaking, writing, listening, and reading. This approach equips learners with the necessary tools to excel in everyday social and work interactions.

The unit prioritises a learner-centered approach, tailoring its content to the specific skill sets and interests of each participant. Engaging activities are employed to exemplify the practical application of English in a variety of scenarios, directly aligning with the learner’s journey.

The learner’s journey shapes the content of this award. To keep the language practical, the activities will be grounded in real-world contexts. Whether it is everyday life or one’s chosen career path, encountering English in these scenarios will allow the learners to become well-versed users of the language.

Entry Requirements

  • A Level 2 qualification in English such as IDEA College’s Award in English Language Proficiency – Level 2 or equivalent.

Target Audience

  • This award targets individuals who would like to improve their English language knowledge and skills and, hence, become more competent in their use of the language.

  • This award aims to equip the target audience with the necessary competencies to become more proficient users of the English language.

How you’ll be assessed

The assessment for this award should comprise of an oral test in the form of a picture interpretation followed by some generic questions on the theme stemming out of the picture and a time constrained assessment including a listening comprehension (for example, a dialogue, a podcast, a briefing, etc.) a reading comprehension, and a short guided writing task (for example, a short letter, a short email, a dialogue, a short essay, etc.)

Assessment

Formative assessment will take place during the session in the form of discussions, feedback, etc.

The assessment aims to provide the learner an opportunity to produce evidence of their competences aligned to the learning outcomes of this module.

Furthermore, the tasks may include different forms of assessment which allow and promote students’ knowledge in the area.

For successful completion of this award, the student is required to achieve an overall pass mark of 50%.

The learner will be able to:

  • Familiarise oneself with varied idiomatic expressions, and nuances of the language.

  • Comprehend and identify the author/speaker’s intent.
  • Develop an understanding of effective reading strategies.
  • Learn how to decipher verbal clues such as tone, emphasis, and pacing, as well as nonverbal cues such as body language and facial expressions.
  • Know how to verbally express oneself in English in a clear, accurate, fluent, and coherent manner.

  • Grasp the main points or central themes of spoken discourse, even when they are conveyed indirectly or implied rather than explicitly stated.

  • Able to read and comprehend varied level-appropriate English texts.
  • Recognise sentence structures and understand the main ideas and supporting details.

  • Make use of sentence structures, verb tenses, and grammatical concepts.
  • Use and apply grammar rules accurately in different contexts.
