Module Description

Professional Development and Communication in Nursing focuses on enhancing participants’ competencies in team building, diagnostic skills, and interpersonal skills.

Grounded in organizational psychology, the module applies these principles to nursing practice.

Participants will learn to effectively collaborate with healthcare teams, refine diagnostic acumen for better patient outcomes, and enhance communication abilities to foster strong patient and colleague relationships.

Through practical exercises and theoretical insights, this module aims to create well-rounded nursing professionals adept at navigating the complexities of modern healthcare environments, ensuring high standards of patient care and teamwork.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course will need to possess:

  • Two A-levels, one of them preferably being in a science subject, or an equivalent qualification at MQF Level 4 (for example, a Level 4 Diploma in Applied Science).
  • Either Biology or Chemistry or Health & Social Care at Intermediate level.

OR

  • At least 1 of the following: Biology, Chemistry, or Health & Social Care at level 4 (advanced or intermediate)
  • and at least 3 of the following: Physics, Sociology, Psychology, English, Maltese or Mathematics at level 4 (advanced or intermediate).

Applicants will also need to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in English language by a valid International English Language Testing System level at overall level 6 or Occupational English Test with B in speaking and C+ in writing or Matriculation and Secondary Education Certificate (MATSEC) pass at Grade 3 or better in English Language.
  • Prior to commence the enrolling in any nursing programme, students should provide evidence of a clean conduct published by the respective police force or authority.
  • In the case of those students who do not possess a Level 4 qualification, but who have a substantial amount of experience in the care industry and who possess O-level standard education, ca n be accepted into this Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing Science, on the condition that they undergo and acquire a pass in a Level 4 preparatory programme offered by IDEA College.

Target Audience

This programme targets:

  • Students who have completed their post-secondary education and would like to pursue a tertiary-level education in nursing.
  • Older adults who have worked in different environments, but mostly in the care industry, who are interested in pursuing a programme in nursing.
  • Individuals who are qualified in areas related to healthcare such as podiatry and physiotherapy and who are looking for or considering a career change in nursing.

Career Paths

  • This Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing Science aims to equip target audience with the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in this programme.
  • 2300 hours of clinical practice learning will be included in a range of primary and hospital settings in line with Directive 2013/55/EC.
  • Successful candidates will be eligible to apply for registration as a first level general nurse with the Maltese Nursing and Midwifery Council

  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

  • Critically analyse the responsibilities of the nurse for ongoing professional development and the required maintenance of contemporary, evidence-based knowledge and skills, as established by the Council for Nurses and Midwives Malta.
  • Appraise the research and evidence base for nurses working in a multi-disciplinary healthcare team and demonstrate effective teamwork practice.
  • Analyse reflective practice as a vehicle for ongoing enhancement of their approach to the delivery of high-quality, solution-focused nursing care.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and professionalism, effectively giving and receiving feedback to improve their approach to nursing in all settings.
  • Critically examine approaches to relationship building with patients, families, and other professionals.

Knowledge:

By the end of this module the student will have been exposed to the following indicative content:

By the end of this module, the students will be able to:

  • Apply communication concepts and theories to solve problems in healthcare-related situations and workplace.
  • Apply psychological principles derived from an understanding of stress management and work-life balance in the context of healthcare and nursing practice.
  • Apply problem-solving and decision-making techniques to selected case studies.
  • Establish how the team is organised to implement the teamwork activities.
  • Identify the strategies to overcome the challenges when working in a team.
  • Evaluate own self-performance when working in a team.
  • Evaluate team members’ performance when working in a team.
  • Develop intra and interpersonal skills when collaborating and working within a teamwork context.
  • Develop team communication skills and techniques which ensure the accomplishment of the team’s objectives.
