Strategic Management
Module Description
This module provides learners with essential knowledge on strategic management and its challenges. It examines strategic management processes, phases, and benefits, helping learners understand its application in various contexts.
The module covers key aspects such as corporate governance and social responsibility in strategic management.
Learners will critically analyze external and internal organizational forces using the PESTEL framework and SWOT analysis.
Additionally, the course will familiarize learners with the factors involved in implementing strategy, equipping them with the tools to navigate and influence strategic directions effectively within their organizations.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course must possess:
- a qualification at MQF Level 4 (one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject)
AND
- a pass in English* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).
Preference is given to applicants having a year of work experience related to the field of study.
*Students whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.
Target Audience
This course is targeted at people who wish to have a thorough background in management in order to progress further in their careers, such as:
- Supervisors
- Coordinators
- Assistant Managers
- Junior Managers
- Middle Managers
- Project Coordinators/ Project Managers
The target group can also be extended to groups that have significant management experience but lack a formal qualification, such as managing directors and officers.
Career Paths
The programme aims to help you progress from first–level supervisory positions to higher managerial roles such as:
- Manager
- Senior Manager
- Head of Department
- Director etc. of any organisation both in the private and public sector.
How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Evening classes for part-time courses.
- Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
- Modular Assessment
- Summative Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
- Manage ethical concerns responsibly and effectively.
- Evaluate external forces through the PESTEL framework and forecasting.
- Carry out internal analysis through the use of the SWOT analysis and analyse the financial, marketing, operations and human resources plan.
- Supervise job design for strategy implementation.
- Measure performance and strategic management by overcoming barriers.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:
- Strategic management (i) processes, (ii) phases, (iii) benefits and (iv) barriers
- The Star Model.
- Corporate governance and Social Responsibility.
- Environmental analysis; the PESTEL framework.
- Internal analysis; SWOT analysis.
- Job design and staffing as part of strategy implementation.
- Performance management and evaluation of goals’ achievements.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Apply the Star Model to own strategic planning.
- Carry out roles and responsibilities in implementing strategy and critique them.
- Apply the most suitable strategy management processes for own situation.

- Evaluate strategic management and performance measurement barriers and methods to counteract them.
- Analyse critically strategic management in various contexts.

The learner will be able to:
- Evaluate own learning on ethical responsibilities in strategic management.
- Proceed to study independently the barriers to strategic management and to measuring performance for further improvement.
- Study the developments in corporate governance to remain abreast any new changes.
- Undertake further independent studies in environmental and internal analysis such as the PESTEL framework and SWOT analysis respectively.
- Proceed to study independently job design for strategy implementation and staffing as part of implementation strategy.

The learner will be able to:
