Interprofessional Working in Nursing Practice
Module Description
This module will enable the student to critically analyse the concept of interprofessional working in nursing practice in relation to managing care in their chosen speciality area and/or other area/s.
They will learn why efficient, effective interprofessional working is essential for patient safety, and also the challenges and opportunities it brings.
They will also critically analyse the evidence underpinning interprofessional working in healthcare practice.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course will hold a:
- Applicants are required to be qualified nurses.
- Applicants are required to hold a full bachelor’s in Nursing with a minimum of 2:1 or 2:2 classification (First-Class Honours, Upper Second-Class Honours, Second-Class Honours).
- For those nurses who hold a foreign qualification, an IELTS 6.0 will be requested at admission stage.
In the case of mature students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the RPL process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted in the course.
Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA College, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.

- This Degree aims to equip qualified nurses with the knowledge and skills needed to advance their own nursing practice in a defined speciality and/or in other area/s following a generic route.
How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Evening classes for part-time courses.
- Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
- Mini Studies
- Modular Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The Modular (formative and summative assessment tasks) may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

- Critically analyse the research evidence base for interprofessional working in nursing and healthcare practice.
- Critically appraise the concept of team in the context of their chosen speciality area and/or other area/s and identify which professionals are normally in the core and wider interprofessional team.
- Critically evaluate how the working environment in their chosen speciality context affects the success of interprofessional working, both positively and negatively.
- Critically analyse the challenges and opportunities of working in interprofessional teams to deliver complex care in their chosen speciality area and/or other area/s.
Knowledge
By the end of the module/unit, the students will be able to:
- Critically discuss the concept of interprofessional working.
- Critically appraise stereotypes and their influence on interprofessional working.
- Outline the role of professional identity in a team context.
- Learn how hierarchies of knowledge influence decision-making in nursing and healthcare.
- Know how to problem solve in an interprofessional context.
- Assess the importance of evidence-based decision-making in a team context.
- Recognise the importance of patient involvement in the interprofessional team.
- Comprehend their ethical and professional responsibilities.
Skills
At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct for Nurses and Midwives when practising their profession.
- Learn how to work in an interprofessional manner in a nursing and healthcare context.
- Analyse case studies of patient experience where interprofessional working has been successful/unsuccessful.
- Manage conflict in interprofessional teams.
- Participate actively in evidence-based decision-making.
- Involve the patient in the interprofessional team.

- Present own discussion and developments in a logical and organised manner through approaches of critical feedback and self-reflection.
