Quality Improvement in Advancing Nursing Practice
Module Description
This module aims to engage students in a critical debate of the principles, theories, and concepts of leading quality improvement and healthcare practice in their chosen speciality area and/or other areas of nursing.
It also provides them with the opportunity to critically appraise models and theories associated with motivation, managing change, and quality improvement, and their own related learning needs.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course will hold a:
- Applicants are required to be qualified nurses.
- Applicants are required to hold a full bachelor’s in Nursing with a minimum of 2:1 or 2:2 classification (First-Class Honours, Upper Second-Class Honours, Second-Class Honours).
- For those nurses who hold a foreign qualification, an IELTS 6.0 will be requested at admission stage.
In the case of mature students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the RPL process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted in the course.
Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA College, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.

- This Degree aims to equip qualified nurses with the knowledge and skills needed to advance their own nursing practice in a defined speciality and/or in other area/s following a generic route.
How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Evening classes for part-time courses.
- Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
- Mini Studies
- Modular Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The Modular (formative and summative assessment tasks) may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
- Critically debate models and theories relating to quality improvement and managing change.
- Critically analyse the contextual complexities of their chosen speciality nursing advanced practice setting and/or other area/s and the challenges for leadership of quality improvement in this context.
- Critically evaluate principles of performance management and resource allocation in a complex health care setting.
- Demonstrate an in-depth critical understanding of the complexities of evidencing improvement in healthcare outcomes.
- Critically appraise their own learning needs for advancing their practice in their chosen speciality nursing context and/or other area/s, in relation to quality improvement.
Knowledge
By the end of the module/unit, the students will be able to:
- Outline theories and models of quality improvement to support continuous improvement of advanced nursing/healthcare practice such as PDSA cycles.
- Critically discuss the rationale for continuous improvement practice and leadership.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of relevant legal and ethical considerations and practices.
- Outline and critically assess the complexities of maintaining patient safety in their chosen speciality setting and/or other setting/s and the role Quality Improvement plays in continuous improvement.
- Critically examine the role of audit in Quality Improvement to assess effectiveness, compliance, and areas of improvement within nursing practice.
- Learn how to devise systematic quality improvement projects aimed at improving the patient experience.
- Appraise unintentional consequences of Quality Improvement initiatives.
Skills
At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Comply with relevant responsibilities of the nurse leader.
- Apply theories and models of quality improvement in an effort to continuously improve practice and leadership in the field of nursing.
- Critically appraise case studies of quality improvement in nursing in their chosen speciality context and/or in other context/s.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the patient’s experience through the implementation of effective quality practices.
- Work towards maintaining patient safety at all times and improving the quality in relevant processes.
- Participate in devising systematic quality improvement projects.
- Conduct and interpret audits to measure and improve nursing practice outcomes.

- Present own discussion and developments in a logical and organised manner through approaches of critical feedback and self-reflection.
