Course Description

The aim of this award is to equip student with a basic level of proficiency in Maltese through the development of the four skills of language – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will acquire basic knowledge to communicate with other individuals in Maltese in their personal and professional spaces, as well as to understand the main idea of some simple conversations.

Students will acquire and strengthen their reading and writing skills through reading comprehensions and short writing tasks, exposing them to important basic vocabulary in Maltese.

Students will also gain knowledge relating to basic grammatical structures and rules of Maltese.

In essence, this award will enable students to become more proficient and, hence, confident in their verbal and written use of the Maltese language.

How you’ll be assessed

The main objective of the assessment for this award is to assess the four language skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Therefore, the assessment tasks shall consist of an oral component, a listening comprehension, a reading comprehension, and a short, guided written task.

Furthermore, formative assessment will take place during the session in the form of discussions, feedback, etc.

Assessment

All assessment tasks aim to provide the learner an opportunity to produce evidence of their competences aligned to the learning outcomes of this module.

Furthermore, the tasks may include different forms of assessment which allow and promote students’ knowledge in the area.

For successful completion of this study unit, the student is required to achieve an overall pass mark of 50%.

For Knowledge:

The learner will be able to:

  • Comprehend and describe the idea and surrounding details of level-appropriate texts and dialogues.
  • Learn how to read level-appropriate texts in Maltese.
  • Consolidate one’s vocabulary in Maltese.
  • Familiarise oneself with level-appropriate grammar in Maltese.
  • Learn how to listen attentively to context clues provided by other active participants when maintaining a conversation.
  • Learn how to express oneself verbally and in writing in Maltese, making use of pertinent vocabulary and grammar structures.
  • Describe and explain basic elements of Maltese culture.

For Skills:

The learner will be able to:

  • Formulate and understand simple phrases in Maltese.
  • Acquire reading and comprehension skills in the Maltese language.
  • Be able to communicate verbally and in writing in Maltese using a range of vocabulary related to different themes.
  • Comprehend and make use of simple grammatical structures in Maltese.
  • Listen attentively when maintaining a conversation and be able to decipher the speaker’s tone and verbal and non-verbal cues.
  • Formulate and answer to questions in Maltese making use of simple grammar.
  • Write level-appropriate texts in Maltese demonstrating correct use of basic grammar and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of important aspects and characteristics of Maltese culture.
