Module Description

This module provides a comprehensive exploration of the pivotal role that financial investigations play within the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) operational and law enforcement recommendations.

Students will delve into key concepts and practices integral to anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) frameworks, gaining insights into strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of financial investigations.

By examining real-world case studies and emerging trends, learners will identify innovative approaches and best practices that can be integrated into AML/CFT frameworks, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to conduct more efficient and impactful financial investigations in diverse regulatory environments.

 

 

 

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess one of the following:

• Level 6 Degree related to one of the following areas: Law, Artificial Intelligence, Finance, Accounting, Governance, Business and Government Policy;

OR

• Level 5 Diploma or Higher Diploma and 4 years’ work experience, preferably in a supervisory or managerial role;

OR

• Level 6 degree not related to Law, Artificial Intelligence, Finance, Accounting, Governance, Business and Government Policy and a minimum of two years relevant experience.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Dissertation Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Identify the movement of money during the course of criminal activity.
  • Identify the sources of information available for the financial investigation.
  • Evaluate the use of financial intelligence.
  • Evaluate the importance of a real time cash declarations/undeclaration system by the Customs Department.
  • Evaluate the importance of having up-to-date register.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  • A robust understanding of the legislation in place that enhances financial investigation techniques.
  • Evaluate the key benefits of using financial investigative techniques.
  • Analyse how the use of financial intelligence can systematically track and measure the contribution that it makes to all investigations.
  • Assess the importance of having real time systems in place and updated and accessible registries.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Ability to assess the importance of identifying the sources of information.
  • Assess the importance of the use of financial intelligence.
  • Explain the operation procedures involved.
  • Explaining the importance to pursue parallel financial investigations.
  • Analyse the importance of having domestic and international investigative task forces.
