Building International Connections Through Healthcare Education
IDEA College recently had the pleasure of welcoming students and lecturers from Hoornbeeck College in the Netherlands as part of an Erasmus+ Nursing Exchange Programme.
Under the theme Caring Across Cultures, the initiative brought together future healthcare professionals to share knowledge, explore different approaches to care, and develop a deeper understanding of healthcare delivery across international settings.
The exchange reflects IDEA College’s commitment to providing students with meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom, fostering both professional development and intercultural awareness.

Day 1: Learning Beyond Borders
The programme commenced with an engaging introduction that brought together students and lecturers from both institutions. Participants explored the objectives of the exchange and discussed the importance of cultural awareness, communication, and collaboration within modern healthcare environments.
Through interactive discussions and workshops, students were encouraged to reflect on the similarities and differences between healthcare systems while recognising the universal values that underpin nursing and care professions. The sessions highlighted the importance of empathy, respect, and effective communication when caring for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Caring Across Cultures in Practice
A key objective of the exchange was to provide participants with practical insights into healthcare delivery in Malta. Students engaged in collaborative activities focused on nursing, care, leadership, and professional practice, creating opportunities to learn from one another’s experiences and perspectives.
By working together, participants gained a broader understanding of how healthcare professionals respond to challenges, support patient wellbeing, and deliver person-centred care in different cultural contexts.

Day 2: Experiencing Healthcare in Malta
The second day of the programme offered students the opportunity to observe healthcare practice first-hand through a visit to St Vincent de Paul Residence.
The visiting Dutch students were paired with IDEA College placement students and explored various wards within the residence. They observed care practices, engaged with healthcare professionals, and gained valuable insight into elderly care services in Malta.
The experience enabled students to compare approaches to care, exchange ideas, and discuss best practices while developing a greater appreciation for the realities of nursing in different healthcare systems.
The Importance of Person-Centred Care
Throughout the visit, students witnessed the significance of compassionate, person-centred care in supporting the wellbeing and dignity of residents. The experience reinforced the values that unite healthcare professionals worldwide, regardless of the country or healthcare system in which they work.
By observing care delivery in a real-world environment, participants were able to connect classroom learning with professional practice while gaining valuable international perspectives.

Strengthening International Collaboration
International exchanges such as this Erasmus+ initiative provide students with opportunities to develop professional networks, broaden their horizons, and gain valuable cultural competencies that are increasingly important within today’s global healthcare landscape.
IDEA College is proud to support initiatives that encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mutual learning between institutions across Europe.
A Special Thank You
We extend our sincere gratitude to St Vincent de Paul Residence for their warm welcome and for providing such a valuable learning environment for our students.
We would also like to thank the students and lecturers from Hoornbeeck College for their enthusiasm, engagement, and willingness to embrace new experiences throughout the exchange.
While healthcare systems may differ across countries, programmes such as Caring Across Cultures remind us that the commitment to caring for others is universal. Through collaboration, learning, and shared experiences, we continue to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals for an increasingly connected world.
