Module Description

This module introduces the learner to the operation and administration of the laws and regulations that are applicable to the insurance industry. The students will be familiarised with the various parties involved in the market – regulators, lawmakers, arbiters, insurers, and others.
The syllabus also navigates the financial services sector by looking at the structure and operation of the Maltese financial services.

Students shall be exposed to both European and local regulatory frameworks in consideration of distribution, consumer protection, financial crimes, the law of torts, the various types of juristic persons, ad other relevant areas including the Civil Code, Insurance Business Act, Insurance Intermediaries Act, Insurance Distribution Act, PRIIPs, MFSA Rules, Conduct of Business Rulebook, GDPR for insurance distribution.

Furthermore, students are introduced to the legal principles relating to financial advice. The module explores the Malta Financial Services Authority’s role and duties as a regulating body of the financial services in Malta as well as the EIPOA’s role as the European regulator for insurance and pensions business.

The module also addresses the law of agency, the law of contract, the legal principles surrounding insurable interest, good faith, and the law of insurance contracts. The skills that are key when communicating with clients and the importance of establishing processes which promote ethical outcomes is also learned.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

– 6 lectures per module;
– 3-hour lectures (evening);
– 12 hours of online content per module, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
• Modular Assessment;
• Project Assessment

The course also includes additional, specialised support to help you write your Dissertation, including classes on Qualitative/Quantitative data analysis tools, as well as Dissertation Workshops.
