Award in Nursing Mentorship
Course Description
This nursing mentorship award prepares registered nurses to undertake the role of mentor in clinical education by integrating professional responsibilities with practical teaching expertise. Participants will explore learning theories and communication strategies to foster effective mentor–student relationships, including trust-building, conflict management, and maintaining professional boundaries.
The course emphasises fair and transparent assessment using competency-based frameworks, reflective practice, and quality assurance measures. Participants will also develop skills in applying diverse and innovative teaching strategies, safe supervision, error management, and the use of digital tools to enhance clinical learning (such as, simulation and scenario platforms, assessment and feedback tools, knowledge organisation tools, etc.).In addition, the programme addresses the mentor’s role in promoting student well-being, professional identity, inclusivity, and resilience. By engaging in feedback, peer review, and self-reflection, participants will be equipped to support student development while contributing to continuous improvement in nursing education.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course will:
- Hold a qualification recognised by the Nursing Council.
- Be registered nurses.
- Demonstrate proficiency in English language through certificates such as a valid International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at overall level 6.

Assessment
All assessment tasks aim to provide the learner with an opportunity to produce evidence of their competences aligned to the learning outcomes of the modules and enhance their learning in the process. Furthermore, the tasks may include different forms of assessment which allow and promote students’ knowledge in the area, their engagement, and other transversal skills that are required in the field.
The potential assessment task(s) for this programme may include case study analysis, reflective essay/portfolio on practices/scenarios, and/or simulated assessment exercises.
The recommended assessment for this award is a critical academic essay which responds to a specific mentoring scenario, such as the one below, where students of this award are expected to:
- Critically discuss two mentoring/learning theories that would best support this student’s progression.
- Analyse the strategies they would choose to support this student.
- Critically evaluate feedback approaches appropriate to this scenario.
- Discuss ethical and governance considerations.
