Module Description

This unit is designed to help learners develop stronger English communication skills for both their professional and personal lives.

It focuses on the four core language components:

  • Speaking

  • Writing

  • Listening

  • Reading

Through these areas, learners will strengthen the abilities needed to communicate effectively and confidently in everyday social and workplace situations.

The unit adapts to the learners’ individual skills and interests, ensuring that activities remain relevant and engaging. All tasks are presented in real-world, practical contexts to reflect how English is used in daily life.

By experiencing the language in diverse settings — from routine interactions to career-related tasks — learners will develop a clear understanding of the importance and usefulness of functional English in today’s multicultural society.

  • Individuals who would like to acquire and/or improve their English language skills.

  • This award aims to support learners in becoming more proficient communicators in English in the areas of work and personal life.

How you’ll be assessed

The assessment for this award comprises of an oral in the form of a picture interpretation followed by some generic questions on the theme stemming out of the picture and a time constrained assessment including a listening comprehension, a reading comprehension, and a short guided writing task.

Furthermore, formative assessment will take place during the session in the form of discussions, feedback, etc., but it will not be graded and, therefore, will have no weighting.

Assessment

The assessment aims to provide the learner an opportunity to produce evidence of their competences aligned to the learning outcomes of this

module. Furthermore, the tasks may include different forms of assessment which allow and promote students’ knowledge in the area.

For successful completion of this award, the student is required to achieve an overall pass mark of 50%

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Able to understand basic spoken English in everyday social and simple professional contexts.

  • Engage in basic conversations with appropriate turn-taking.

  • Recognise simple text structures and understand the main ideas and supporting details.

  • Use basic vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures in writing.
