Module Description

The concept and practice of cross-cultural communication has gained prominence in the tourism and hospitality industry in recent years. The aim of this module is to introduce learners to this vast concept.

Through this module, learners will gain an appreciation of the differences amongst cultures and the different cultural beliefs and values. Learners will develop knowledge regarding the advantages and obstacles in cross-cultural communication as well as develop important intercultural skills of communication. 

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess:

  • A qualification at MQF Level 4 (one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject) and a pass in English Language* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

In the case of students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted on the course. Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA College, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.

Evidence may include:

  • A detailed CV outlining relevant work experience and responsibilities.
  • Employer reference letters outlining job role, duration, and key competencies.
  • Related documentation demonstrating relevant skills (e.g. work portfolio).

*Students whose first language is not English and do not possess an ‘O’ level pass in English Language will be required to demonstrate English language capability at IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Formative Assessment
  • Summative Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: 

  • Critically examine the elements and principles of cross-cultural communication. 
  • Become aware of the differences amongst cultures. 
  • Become appreciative of different cultural beliefs, and values. 
  • Acquire intercultural skills of communication to develop culture intelligence.  
  • Identify and critically analyse the benefits of and barriers in cross-cultural communication within the tourism and hospitality sector. 
  • Develop and apply strategic and innovative communication approaches that foster effective intercultural understanding, collaboration, and inclusion within tourism and hospitality contexts. 

Knowledge

By the end of the module/unit, the students will be able to:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Appraise and solve problems within cross-cultural communication. 
  • Adapt to cultural differences in verbal and non-verbal communication.  
  • Analyse the impact of gender, sex, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and age in cross-cultural communication.  
  • Ensure good customer service in the tourism and hospitality sector using transversal cross-cultural communication skills. 
  • Critically appraise cultural issues within different types of relationships within the tourism and hospitality industry.  
  • Design and implement strategic and innovative communication frameworks that effectively bridge cultural differences. 

Module-Specific Learner Skills

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to: 

  • Become aware and appreciative of differences in culture and overcome stereotypes that may lead to cultural discrimination. 
  • Appraise how cross-cultural communication promotes cultural appreciation amongst tourists with regard to their culture and also in relation to other cultures.

The learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
