Introduction to Health and Safety Management
Module Description
Health and safety management on construction sites is of utmost importance and priority, due to the hazards encountered on construction sites.
This module will provide an introduction to the various site set-up requirements for construction projects including temporary works.
It also highlights the types of hazards most commonly found on construction sites and underlines the importance of professional management of health and safety.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course must possess the following:
- a qualification at MQF Level 4 (one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject);
AND
- a pass in English Language and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).
Preference is given to applicants having a year of work experience in a field related to the study programme.
Target Audience
This course is targeted at:
- individuals aspiring to work as quantity surveyors;
- individuals who wish to advance their education and gain in depth knowledge and skills related to quantity surveying;
- individuals already working in the field of quantity surveying who would like to obtain a qualification in quantity surveying.

How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Evening classes for part-time courses.
- Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
- Modular Assessment
- Summative Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:
- Identify and analyse the requirements of site set-up and how the successful implementation of these is key to the successful management of the project.
- Evaluate health and safety hazards and risks associated with construction work.
- Analyse the requirements of health and safety legislation, and best practices and methodologies for management of health and safety on construction sites.
- Assess the importance of incorporating the requirements of site set-up and health and safety management at an early stage of the project and include such requirements in tender documents to ensure that appropriate contractors take these requirements as part of their scope of works.

- Analyse the importance of site set-up for the successful running of a construction project, and the issues underpinning each of the various elements of such a set-up.

- Asess cost and time implications on project budget and programme respectively, and apply this knowledge in the execution of the role of quantity surveying.
