Leadership and Management in Nursing Practice
Module Description
This module focuses on the theory underpinning the leadership and management roles and responsibilities of the qualified nurse. Students will delve into essential leadership principles and management strategies, learning how to apply these concepts in various nursing contexts.
The curriculum covers topics such as effective communication, team building, conflict resolution, and decision-making, all crucial for successful leadership in healthcare settings. A significant emphasis is placed on understanding Maltese legislation related to the healthcare sector, ensuring that students are well-versed in local legal frameworks and regulatory requirements.
By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical insights, this module prepares students to effectively lead and manage healthcare teams, promote a positive work environment, and ensure high standards of patient care.
Students will be equipped to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system, advocate for best practices, and uphold professional and legal standards in their leadership roles.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course will need to possess:
- Two A-levels, one of them preferably being in a science subject, or an equivalent qualification at MQF Level 4 (for example, a Level 4 Diploma in Applied Science).
- Either Biology or Chemistry or Health & Social Care at Intermediate level.
OR
- At least 1 of the following: Biology, Chemistry, or Health & Social Care at level 4 (advanced or intermediate)
- and at least 3 of the following: Physics, Sociology, Psychology, English, Maltese or Mathematics at level 4 (advanced or intermediate).
Applicants will also need to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in English language by a valid International English Language Testing System level at overall level 6 or Occupational English Test with B in speaking and C+ in writing or Matriculation and Secondary Education Certificate (MATSEC) pass at Grade 3 or better in English Language.
- Prior to commence the enrolling in any nursing programme, students should provide evidence of a clean conduct published by the respective police force or authority.
- In the case of those students who do not possess a Level 4 qualification, but who have a substantial amount of experience in the care industry and who possess O-level standard education, ca n be accepted into this Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing Science, on the condition that they undergo and acquire a pass in a Level 4 preparatory programme offered by IDEA College.

Target Audience
This programme targets:
- Students who have completed their post-secondary education and would like to pursue a tertiary-level education in nursing.
- Older adults who have worked in different environments, but mostly in the care industry, who are interested in pursuing a programme in nursing.
- Individuals who are qualified in areas related to healthcare such as podiatry and physiotherapy and who are looking for or considering a career change in nursing.
Career Paths
- This Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing Science aims to equip target audience with the knowledge, skills and competencies listed in this programme.
- 2300 hours of clinical practice learning will be included in a range of primary and hospital settings in line with Directive 2013/55/EC.
- Successful candidates will be eligible to apply for registration as a first level general nurse with the Maltese Nursing and Midwifery Council
How you’ll be assessed
This module comprises of:
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

- Appraise own leadership style and identify opportunities for further learning.

By the end of this module, the students will be able to:
- Draw on theoretical frameworks and models to make decisions about leadership approaches required in given situations.
- Assess practice in each area and identify opportunities for quality improvement.
- Devise systematic quality improvement projects aimed at improving the patient experience.
- Participate in complex team practice situations, assess risk, and prioritise actions.
- Critically analyse different situations requiring leadership and management drawing on theory in the context of the situation.
- Critically appraise best practice evidence to inform own leadership and management.
- Critically reflect on learning needs in relation to future nursing leadership roles.
- As a leader, communicate with the team clearly, both verbally and in written form, to ensure expectations of practice standards are well understood.
