Makeup for Television, Film, Stage, and Theatre
Module Description
In this module, students will learn about fantasy and theatre makeup, stimulating their creative and innovative abilities. Learners will familiarise themselves with the makeup required for different characters in television, film, stage, and theatre, such as:
- Makeup of dames in pantos;
- Drag queen makeup for shows;
- The makeup used to transfer males into females or females into males, and;
- The makeup used to create fantasy characters for photoshoots, shows, or the stage.
In addition, students will learn how to apply artificial facial hair (moustache and beard), as well as acquiring the skill of putting on wigs and the application of sequins and glitters.
Furthermore, learners will be shown how the body can be used as a canvas for body-painting, exposing them, in this manner, to the required shading and stencilling techniques using appropriate makeup products.
Entry Requirements
Candidates who apply for this course will possess:
- A qualification at MQF Level 4 (VTCT/MCAST/ITEC/CIBTAC qualification in Beauty Therapy or Makeup or one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject) and English Language at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).
In the case of students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted on the course. Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA College, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.
*Students whose first language is not English and do not possess an ‘O’ level pass in English Language will be required to demonstrate English language capability at IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent.

- Makeup artists who mainly do bridal makeup to advance and improve their makeup skills in all areas of makeup.
- Individuals who would like a career in makeup artistry and would like to gain solid knowledge and skills relating to professional makeup artistry in all the different fields in the industry.

Professional Makeup Artists can be self-employed or employed within different organisations. The roles and responsibilities vary depending on the industry’s structure.

How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Evening classes for part-time courses.
- Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
- Formative Assessment
- Summative Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.
Learning Outcomes
Competences:
- Produce a plan for a fantasy makeup.Create a fantasy makeup look.
- Produce a plan for body painting.

- Collaborate with film, television, stage, and theatre directors and actors/actresses.
- Contribute to entrepreneurial projects specialising in character and theatrical makeup.
Skills:
- Demonstrate and produce a dame makeup using wigs, concealing eyebrows, etc., for a stage production.
- Apply makeup to transform a male into a female for stage production.
- Apply makeup to transform a female into a male using artificial hair to produce a beard, and/or moustache for a stage production.
- Design and produce a fantasy makeup look using embellishing applications such as sequins and glitters for a stage or a show.
- Practise bodypainting for a photoshoot.
- Design a basic marketing concept for promoting specialised makeup services for film, television, or theatre productions.
Knowledge:
By the end of the module/unit, the students will be able to:
- Familiarise oneself with the fantasy makeup that can be created for film, television, stage, and/or theatre.
- Describe the dame makeup required for stage/theatre.
- Outline the embellishing applications that will be made use of in their makeup plan.
- List specialised products that can be used to conceal eyebrows.
- Learn how to use makeup to transform males into females and vice versa.
- Identify which specialised products should be used for the specific makeup plan, for example: artificial hair, spirit gum, etc.
- Identify entrepreneurial pathways related to fantasy and theatrical makeup in the entertainment and creative sectors.
Module-Specific Learner Skills:
- Practise shading techniques for bodypainting.
- Demonstrate how to use spirit gum to stick artificial hair to the face.
- Demonstrate how to stick embellishments such as sequins and glitters to the face/body for fantasy makeup.
- Make use of stencils to create designs on the face or body.
Module-Specific Digital Skills and Competences
At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to
- Navigate through the online learning platform to find assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
