Module Description

This module introduces students to important research concepts, approaches, and methodologies relevant to the fields of hospitality and tourism management. It is designed to equip students with the competences, knowledge, and skills necessary to understand, design, and carry out research that addresses real-world issues and opportunities within these dynamic industries. 

This module is a comprehensive introduction to research methods and will cover the following broad topics: the fundamentals of doing research, research design, data collection, data analysis, and research methodology, including Research Problem, Research Objectives, Research Type, Research Hypothesis, Research Approach and Research Strategy. In discussing each topic, the ethical implications of research will be covered.  

In this module, students will also be exposed to the importance of original and critical thinking and how to undertake this essential skill through practical tasks.  

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess:

  • A qualification at MQF Level 4 (one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject) and a pass in English Language* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

In the case of students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted on the course. Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA College, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.

Evidence may include:

  • A detailed CV outlining relevant work experience and responsibilities.
  • Employer reference letters outlining job role, duration, and key competencies.
  • Related documentation demonstrating relevant skills (e.g. work portfolio).

*Students whose first language is not English and do not possess an ‘O’ level pass in English Language will be required to demonstrate English language capability at IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Formative Assessment
  • Summative Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: 

  • Develop knowledge of different research methods and the importance of ethics in research.  
  • Appropriately identify, formulate, and select a research problem relating to the field of study of hospitality and tourism management. 
  • Apply appropriate critical thinking skills to review existing literature and write a proper literature review.  
  • Manage research projects effectively. 
  • Write and present a research proposal.

By the end of the module/unit, the students will be able to:

Skills

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Reflect on a range of quantitative and qualitative research designs and identify the advantages and disadvantages associated with these designs. 
  • Identify which quantitative and qualitative methods are appropriate for data collection. 
  • Evaluate the importance of data sampling and data collection for inductive and deductive research. 
  • Identify the need for a literature review and examine how to carry out a good literature review. 
  • Review and synthesise the work of other authors relevant to the chosen topic of dissertation. 
  • Assess the most appropriate research method to address a particular research question. 
  • Identify and solve ethical issues that may arise while carrying out research. 

Module-Specific Learner Skills

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to: 

  • Interpret and make use of qualitative and quantitative information to communicate problems and solutions and to justify arguments and ideas. 
  • Reflect upon and formulate appropriate research questions. 
  • Communicate and present to the wider audience ideas, research proposals, literature survey/review, and research outcomes in a clear and concise way. 
  • Develop a strong research-based skillset in preparation for the dissertation.

The learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
