Module Description

This module provides grounding in core theoretical concepts, principles and processes associated with operations management related to organisations. Participants will challenge, critique, analyse, evaluate and synthesize ideas and concepts in the context of their own organisation.

The module is designed to familiarize the student with benchmarking and operations analysis tools and techniques used in various industries. T

he course covers both the process of internal and external benchmarking as well as the analysis of marketing, financial, operational and guest satisfaction metrics.

The course also focuses on multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) as also the analysis and performance critique of multi-unit operations.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess one of the following: 

  • Level 6 degree; 

 OR  

  • Level 5 diploma or higher diploma and 5 years’ work experience in a supervisory or managerial role. 

 

Preference is given to applicants having a Level 6 degree in a discipline related to the study programme and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in management

The target group focuses primarily on people already employed within supervisory and managerial roles who wish to have a more thorough background in the subject in order to progress further in their careers.

The programme aims to prepare you for senior posts such as that of General Manager, Head of Department or Director of any organisation, both in the private and public sector.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Dissertation Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Critically analyse and compare studies of different operations systems design, planning and control systems, and quality management philosophies (e.g. conventional Western vs. Asian systems and philosophies) in relation to own organisation.
  • Analyse critically operations management initiatives and techniques that can be applied in the development of operations management strategy.
  • Assess a variety of approaches to design and organise the various components of operations.
  • Critically evaluate techniques for measuring and improving overall performance, preventing failures and ensuring organisation operations of quality.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Discuss critically the importance and benefits of operations management.
  • Critically examine the operations model, layout and flow of workability and flaws in organisations (focusing on own organisation)
  • Critically assess the nature of planning and controlling in context of quality management theory.
  • Critically appraise the appropriateness and applicability of a range of operations management systems/models.
  • Critically analyse and synthesize a range of philosophies for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of organisational operations in relation to Total Quality Management principles.
  • Critically evaluate a selection of frameworks used in the design and delivery of operations in organisations.
