Module Description

This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of strategy development and management, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of strategic decision-making.

Students will explore the challenges inherent in formulating and implementing effective strategies, examining the relevant management processes, phases, and potential benefits.

Additionally, the module emphasizes the importance of governance, ethics, and social responsibility across diverse industries, preparing students to address ethical dilemmas and societal concerns in their strategic decision-making processes.

Through critical analysis of external and internal organizational forces, students will gain insights into the factors influencing strategy design, development, and implementation.

Furthermore, students will delve into leadership theories and styles that support organizational development, enabling them to effectively lead and inspire teams towards strategic objectives. Overall, this module empowers students to become strategic thinkers and leaders capable of driving organizational success in dynamic and competitive environments.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess one of the following: 

  • a Level 6 degree; 

OR  

  • a Level 5 diploma or higher diploma and 5 years’ work experience in a supervisory or managerial role. 

 

Preference is given to applicants having a Level 6 degree in a discipline related to the study programme and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in management

The target group focuses primarily on people already employed within supervisory and managerial roles who wish to have a more thorough background in the subject in order to progress further in their careers. 

Career Paths

The programme aims to prepare you for senior posts such as that of General Manager, Head of Department or Director of any organisation, both in the private and public sector.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Dissertation Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Critically analyse and communicate the opportunities to achieve strategic leadership development both with specialists and non-specialists.
  • Manage debate and dialogue both with specialists and non-specialists to critically analyse and evaluate the steps the leadership can take to develop organisational strategy.
  • Design a personal development plan to achieve strategic leadership development.
  • Devise an implementation process for the development plan.
  • Critically assess the impact of strategic leadership development on the success of organisational strategy.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  • Critically evaluate Strategic Management processes, phases, benefits and barriers.
  • Critically analyse Strategic Management challenges in the context of 5Ps of competitive advantage § Understand Corporate Governance, Ethics and Social Responsibility.
  • Critically discuss the concept of managers as effective leaders in relation to leadership theories.
  • Critically assess the concept of leaders as effective managers in context of strategic management theory.
  • Critically evaluate the balance needed between the demands of strategic management and leadership.
  • Recognise and evaluate leadership qualities that support organisational mission and values in own organisational settings.

Skills:

At  the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Applying knowledge and understanding The learner will be able to:
  • Critically analyse the importance of using Star Model to strategic planning and the 5Ps of competitive advantage.
  • Apply the most suitable strategy management processes in context of organisational development and management theory.
  • Critically evaluate the effectiveness of strategic leadership development in achieving advancement of professional leadership practices in organisations.
  • Establish a process for developing and formulating strategy based on the organisational development strategy by critically analysing the political, social, ethical and operational needs for common strategy in organisations.
  • Critically evaluate how strategic intelligence is used in the development and formulation of strategy.
  • Explicate how strategy is influenced by the reality of factors including political, global, public interest, media impact, and social, cultural and religious in the modern context.
