Module Description

This module provides a comprehensive overview of current nutritional issues impacting diet, health, and disease in older adults.

Students will explore major advancements in nutritional sciences over the past decade, focusing on how diet influences cognitive function and disease prevention.

The course will cover critical topics such as nutrient requirements, dietary adjustments for chronic conditions, and evidence-based strategies for improving nutritional health.

By examining these advancements, students will gain practical knowledge to support elderly individuals in maintaining optimal health through informed dietary choices and effective nutrition management.

 

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply must be in possession of at least one of the following:

 

  • a pass in English Language and Mathematics;

OR

  • an MQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

This course is targeted at:

  • Candidates seeking a career and a formal qualification in elderly care;
  • Candidates who wish to progress in their studies along the Further and Higher Education route, whilst broadening their chances of advancing in their own career path.

Career Paths

  • This programme aims to prepare you to become a caregiver for elderly persons, in line with the National Occupational Standards for Elderly Care.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Acquire a comprehensive understanding on the facts, principles and science of nutrition.
  • Identify information on additional services available in the community to help elderly maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Assist in maintaining Nutritional Care Plan for a confirmed diagnosed patients.
  • Develop an understanding of the critical role of nutrition in improving the quality of care to elderly patients.
  • Identify basic nutrition care plans according to different health and medical conditions.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Nutrition facts and principles.
  • The Body Mass Index.
  • Medical conditions caused due to poor nutrition.
  • Diet and cognition.
  • Nutritional Assessment: The ABCD Approach.
  • Nutrition facts related to health care of medical and health conditions.
  • Wound care for diabetic patients.
  • Nutritional education for diabetic patients taking insulin.
  • Nutritional education for high cholesterol patients.
  • Screening for cholesterol.
  • Warfarin patients, high blood pressure.
  • The difference between macro and micronutrients in food.
  • The importance of a healthy lifestyle.
  • The importance of common minerals that people require in their diet.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of eating disorders.
  • Identify malnutrition practices of patients with specific health and medical conditions.
  • Demonstrate an ability to integrate a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet to address specific health and medical conditions.

Module-Specific Digital Skills and Competences:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
