Learning Outcomes
Competences:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:
- Assist elderly patients/residents achieve optimum health, independence in a professional caring and ethical manner.
- Deliver personal care for elderly whether health promotional, preventive, curative, rehabilitative or supportive.
- Demonstrate a knowledge base and a level of competence in carrying practice skills essential for safe practice.
- Able to carry out infection prevention and control routinines.
- Identify and meet the needs of elderly patients/residents.
- Demonstrate development of skills of communication, documentation and problem-solving.
- Act as an effective member of a health care team and participate in the multi-disciplinary team approach to the care of Elderly patients/residents.
- Provide equitable care upholding respect, dignity and equal rights.
Knowledge:
At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:
- Principles and standards of practice in an Elderly Care setting.
- Ethical considerations and practices in supporting elderly.
- Introduction to an integrated holistic approach to elderly care.
- Basic communication styles, skills and techniques when working with a health team towards a common goal in supporting elderly.
- The organisation’s objectives and different roles and responsibilities of team members to achieve them.
- The interdependency of team members in their individual roles in supporting elderly.
Skills:
At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Keep immediate environment clean and free from hazards adhering to a management outbreak control plans/protocols and, if need be, making a proper use of personal protective equipment to control and prevent infections from spreading.
- Follow the objectives and frameworks for the elderly care in context of one’s roles and responsibilities.
- Communicate and report effectively in person and in writing in a clear, respectful and legible manner between clients, colleagues and other relevant stakeholders using available technology.
- Recognise changes in the elderly patient/ resident’s daily routines and observe and report breathing patters, infections, changes in feeding, drinking, bathing among any other worrying signs and changes.
- Monitor that adequate well-balance diet is kept to meet nutritional efficiency in elderly.
- Identify and report any clients care plan and update as advised and/ or necessary.
- Treat and respect elderly, colleagues and other stakeholders by adopting a professional and courteous work ethic and positive and professional approach during the execution of the tasks.
Judgment Skills and Critical Abilities:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:
- Select the best appropriate way of assisting the elders depending on the special needs/conditions/ illnesses and follow instructions from other health professionals to safeguard the elders’ well-being.
- Identify possible risks and take appropriate actions in order to prevent elderly and other stakeholders from any possible harm.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:
- Promote a multi-disciplinary approach in relation to accountability and responsibilities.
- Identify and discuss the elderly patient’s needs and requirement using person-centered approach.

- Be committed to attend continuous development to keep abreast of new developments within the elderly care sector with the aim of enhancing their skills to meet the clients’ needs.

- Use the necessary informatics and technology available to record and report as instructed and required by mentors and work placement entity.
