Introduction to Managing Teams
Module Description
This module aims to introduce qualified nurses to essential functions of health team management, encompassing organizing, planning, controlling, directing, leading, and conflict resolution.
It delves into the critical roles of management, motivation, and leadership in fostering effective teamwork among nurses within healthcare environments.
Through practical examples and case studies, nurses will gain insights into optimizing team dynamics, enhancing communication, and resolving conflicts constructively.
By mastering these skills, nurses are empowered to contribute effectively to the delivery of high-quality patient care, foster a positive work environment, and promote overall organizational success within healthcare settings.
Entry Requirements
- Candidates who apply for this course must possess a qualification equivalent to a Higher Diploma (120 ECTS) in Nursing accredited at MQF 5.
- Preference will be given to prospective applicants having a year of work experience related to the study programme.
Target Audience
- This programme is targeted at nurses who are registered with the Council for Nurses and Midwives Malta and/or other registering bodies.
Module / Unit Instructions
The proposed structure comprises a blended approach promoting the building of a community of practice via peer-to-peer learning. The structure uses primarily two dimensions of teaching-learning modes:
- Face to Face sessions
Face-to-face sessions include lectures, tutorials, discussions, presentations and workshop activities promoting peer-to-peer learning.
- Online Learning Activities
Online learning activities incorporate tutorials and asynchronous discussions. These may consist of active interaction, participation and contributions in fora discussions, sharing resources and self-reflection exercises. Learners also contribute to the building of the community of practice by providing feedback to their peers as critical friends, enhancing the learner’s critical engagement throughout the study period.
How you’ll be assessed
The course comprises:
- Evening classes for part-time courses.
- Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
- Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
- Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:
- Formative Assessment
- Summative Assessment
The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes
Competences:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the ability to, independently:
- Identify and critically analyse nursing team competencies, roles, functions and motivational tools to manage heath teams.
- Identify and evaluate the different stages of team development and how a manager can support the team at each stage.
- Identify and manage health team processes (inputs, throughputs and outputs)
- Critically assess and apply the necessary tools to manage conflict and solve problems in heath teams.
Knowledge:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:
- Healthcare Teams and Team Members.
- Working in Healthcare Teams part 1.
- Working in Healthcare Teams part 2.
- Functions of Managing Health Teams.
- Identifying the roles of team managers (Mintzberg’s Roles in context of Health Teams)
- Building and Advancing Healthcare Teams.
Skills:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:
- Critically apply functions of management to plan, coordinate, and supervise the health teams.
- Set SMART targets for oneself and the health teams.
- Apply the critical interpersonal, informational, and decisional skills to health team management as it relates to Mintzberg’s Roles of Manager.
- Identify types and competencies of health teams.
Module-Specific Communication Skills:
The learner will be able to:
- Critically analyse team communication needs and devise a plan for addressing these needs.

- Improve personal time management and planning skills in relation to team management.

- Navigate through the online learning platform to find assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials etc.
