Module Description

Different construction projects have different technological, structural and engineering requirements. A simple house differs significantly from a high-rise building, or an infrastructural building or a highway.

The same applies to the electrical and mechanical services requirements of different types of projects, as indeed to the architectural features.

Construction project managers must be aware of these different requirements and appreciate the need for such requirements and how the different disciplines must come together to ensure that the project outcome will be achieved.

This module will introduce students to the various building technologies used in modern construction projects, the design aspects behind these methods and materials used.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who wish to apply for the B.Sc. Top-Up degree must possess the following:

• a full qualification at MQF Level 5 with 120 ECTS in a discipline related to this programme.

Candidates who wish to apply for the Level 6 Award must possess the following:

• a qualification at MQF Level 5 in a discipline related to this programme;

OR

• any other qualification at MQF Level 5 and 3 years’ work experience within the construction industry.

Target Audience

This course is targeted at:

  • Professionals within the construction industry with a full Level 5 qualification in construction-related studies, seeking to achieve a B.Sc. Top-Up degree;
  • Professionals within the construction industry seeking professional and academic advancement, leading to a Level 6 Award.

Module / Unit Instructions

The proposed structure comprises a blended approach promoting the building of a community of practice via peer-to-peer learning. The structure uses primarily two dimensions of teaching-learning modes:

  • Face to Face sessions

Face-to-face sessions include lectures, tutorials, discussions, presentations and workshop activities promoting peer-to-peer learning.

  • Online Learning Activities

Online learning activities incorporate tutorials and asynchronous discussions. These may consist of active interaction, participation and contributions in fora discussions, sharing resources and self-reflection exercises. Learners also contribute to the building of the community of practice by providing feedback to their peers as critical friends, enhancing the learner’s critical engagement throughout the study period.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Assessment 1
  • Assessment 2

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:
At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Classify and be able to apply various construction methods and materials as well as technologies related to ground engineering and substructures, the building superstructure, its envelope, finishes, and engineering services.
  • Analyse various tools, machinery, and software generally used in the various phases of construction projects and finished facilities.
  • Assess the rationale behind the choice of construction methods, materials, tools, and technologies in relation the construction phase and the finished facility.
  • Examine different construction projects and recommend the methods, materials, tools, technologies, and machinery used.

Knowledge:
Learning Outcomes:

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the various technologies that are related to the construction industry in general.
  • Have an understanding of the processes, regulations and risks associated with Deconstruction and demolition works and excavation.
  • Identify the building design requirements applicable to most structures and construction projects.
  • Differentiate between different construction methods, materials, tools, machinery, and technologies and determine appropriateness in relation to different construction projects.
  • Understand the need for various tools and materials used in the construction industry, from design to final completion.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following indicative content:

Building Materials

  • The application and properties of a variety of materials used in construction
  • The main groups of materials:  metals, stone, concrete, timber and glass in relation to a specific construction project and related structures.
  • The behavior of various construction materials and their application in construction project and the eventual built structures and facilities;
  • Other materials used in construction such as ceramics, bituminous materials and others as well as materials considered to be ‘green’ materials in relation to a specific construction project.

Building Technologies

  • The various technologies and the various engineering services technologies applicable to a specific construction project including:
  • Building services technologies;
  • Building management technologies;
  • Technologies related to green construction;

Green Construction
