Course Description
The Award in Cultural Integration in Malta is a 13-ECTS award at MQF Level 2, designed to equip foreigners with the knowledge, skills, and competences required to integrate effectively into Maltese society, civic life, and the professional environment. The award addresses the multidimensional nature of cultural integration, encompassing social norms and etiquette, civic and legal literacy, workplace expectations, language awareness, and day-to-day practical living skills specific to the Maltese context.
Structured across 8 compulsory modules, the award is delivered in a blended learning format combining face-to-face sessions with guided local experiential activities, such as cultural tours, community visits, and participatory workshops. The curriculum is sequenced to build progressively from foundational orientation and integration mindset (Module 1) through Maltese society, culture, and identity (Module 2), civic life and legal frameworks (Module 3), communication, language, and workplace culture (Module 4), practical everyday living in Malta (Module 5), social integration and community participation (Module 6), guided cultural and community experiences (Module 7), and concludes with a reflective module on cultural adjustment, wellbeing, and future integration pathways (Module 8).
Entry Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry requirements:
(a) Status: Foreigners residing in or planning to reside in Malta, with a valid or pending residence permit, or in the process of applying for a Single Permit or other relevant permit under Maltese and EU law.
(b) Language: Functional proficiency in English since all instruction is delivered in English. No formal English language qualification is required, but applicants are expected to follow and participate in English-medium instruction.
(c) Qualifications: No prior formal qualifications are required. The award is open to adults from all educational backgrounds.
(d) Digital Competences: Basic ability to use a smartphone or computer for communication purposes (e.g., email, messaging, accessing online resources) is desirable but not mandatory. Learners requiring additional digital support will be accommodated.
No prior knowledge of Maltese language, law or culture is assumed or required.

Career Paths
- This award does not lead to a warranted profession or regulated occupation. It is designed to support the social, civic and professional integration of foreigners residing in or relocating to Malta, and is directly relevant to occupations and roles in which cultural competence, workplace integration and civic awareness are valued. These include, but are not limited to: administrative roles in public and private sector entities employing international staff; community liaison and integration support roles; roles within NGOs, social services and community organisations working with migrant populations; hospitality, tourism and customer-facing roles requiring intercultural communication skills. The award is complementary to, but does not replace, any specific National Occupational Standard (NOS) currently listed on the Malta Qualifications Database (MQD). No specific NOS directly maps to the cultural integration domain at this level; however, the award aligns with the spirit of the European Key Competences framework, particularly in the areas of civic competence, cultural awareness, and personal, social and learning-to-learn competence.

Assessment
- The award employs a practical and learner-centred assessment approach designed to support participation, engagement, and the development of everyday integration competences relevant to life in Malta. Assessment methods used across the award include practical tasks, short quizzes, guided worksheets, simple reflective activities, role-play exercises, scenario-based activities, participation in guided cultural and community experiences, and the completion of a simple learner portfolio.
This basic portfolio of evidence is compiled throughout the award and includes completed activities, observation tasks, guided reflections, and practical exercises completed during the 8 different modules. The portfolio supports learner engagement and provides evidence of participation and progression throughout the award..
- Assessments are designed to evaluate basic understanding, practical application, and engagement with award activities rather than academic analysis. Learners complete a range of structured activities throughout the award, including matching tasks, observation activities, short written or guided reflective tasks, practical exercises related to everyday life in Malta, and participation in group discussions and guided experiential activities. Some modules also include simple online tasks or quizzes administered through the VLE.
- Assessment across the award focuses on participation, completion of tasks, respectful engagement, and demonstration of basic practical understanding relevant to integration and participation in Maltese society. The guided cultural and community-based activities form an important component of the experiential learning approach adopted by the award.

- Carry out everyday tasks in Malta (e.g. using public transport, accessing healthcare, attending civic appointments) by applying basic knowledge of Malta’s geography, institutions, and legal context, following straightforward instructions and guided resources.
- Use simple Maltese greetings, polite expressions, and basic workplace terms appropriately in everyday social and workplace interactions, drawing on awareness of Maltese and European social norms and etiquette.
- Locate and use practical information on daily life and support services in Malta, including for foreign residents, through guided use of websites, digital tools, and the VLE.
- Perform routine tasks in a Maltese workplace setting under tutor or supervisor guidance, applying basic professional norms and an awareness of relevant employment-related rules.
- Participate in structured group and community activities in Malta, following simple social rules and demonstrating basic awareness of civic institutions and public conduct expectations.
- Recognise common adjustment difficulties faced by newcomers to Malta and apply straightforward, guided strategies to manage them in everyday and workplace situations.
