Module Description

This module delves into the tools to communicate, as well as to motivate and influence the outcome of communication as applicable to elderly care settings.

It aims to provide a learning opportunity allowing you to explore different styles, tools and techniques which could be used for effectively communicating with others on the workplace.

You will explore critical topics such as effective communication, the role of personality and perception in communication, influence and motivation, as well as building and gaining rapport.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply must be in possession of at least one of the following:

 

  • a pass in English Language and Mathematics;

OR

  • an MQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

Target Audience

This course is targeted at:

  • Candidates seeking a career and a formal qualification in elderly care;
  • Candidates who wish to progress in their studies along the Further and Higher Education route, whilst broadening their chances of advancing in their own career path.

Career Paths

  • This programme aims to prepare you to become a caregiver for elderly persons, in line with the National Occupational Standards for Elderly Care.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Examine different communication stages, techniques and styles;
  • Develop an understanding of different motivational and influencing techniques and methodologies;
  • Adapt communication style and promote effective communication to assist elderly who have difficulties with verbal communication or who present a challenging behaviour;
  • Identify barriers and promoters to communication and engage in anti-discriminatory practice while assisting colleagues and elderly;
  • Use active listening skills and rapport building techniques to deal with difficult communication scenarios with all relevant stakeholders.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Effective Communication – Art or Science?
  • Setting clear communication objectives in elderly care settings.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Identify facilitation and paraphrasing skills to improve communication engagement with colleagues and elderly patients;
  • Apply effective delegation, feedback and listening skills appropriately with elderly and staff;
  • Discuss different communication styles, needs and non-discriminatory techniques as applied in elderly care;
  • Apply the appropriate style and language to communicate ideas clearly, accurately and vividly with all stakeholders in elderly care settings.

Judgment Skills and Critical Abilities:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Analyse conflict situations and ways to resolve conflict using empathy, respect, cultural sensitivity and active listening.

Module-Specific Communication Skills :

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Interpret and be sensitive to verbal and non-verbal communication e.g., body language.
  • Develop effective and affective listening skills.

Module-Specific Learner Skills:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Keep abreast of reporting and confidentiality policies and procedures and codes (verbal or in writing) related to communication with superiors.

Module-Specific Digital Skills and Competences:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
  • Identify technological requirements for written and verbal communication to record information and to provide accurate hand-overs and/or reports or to escalate and/or report the issue.
