Module Description

Digital technology affects almost every aspect of our personal and professional lives, transforming many industries including retail.

This module aims to help students explore the meaning of digital and how it is changing the way we work and live.

The students will also discover digital’s impact on retail industry and consider the opportunities and challenges it brings including data transforming customer experiences and operations and the increasing impact of connected devices and automation.

 

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess a pass in English Language* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent). 

  • Students whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.  

 

 

Target Audience

  • This course is targeted at people within the retail sector and other individuals aspiring for professional and academic advancement in retail operations.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the opportunities and challenges the digital changes and technologies bring to retail industry.
  • Examine the meaning of digital and a growth mindset in context of retail industry and personal and professional progression.
  • Explore the digital tools as applied in retail.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  • The meaning of digital.
  • Identifying the meaning of a growth mindset.
  • Challenges and opportunities of digital world.
  • Retail and the digital age.
  • Digital Payments and Cashier Management.
  • The Customer Data.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Recommend how digital can help retailers improve customer experience by using the customer data, digital marketing and omni-channels.
  • Be able to provide customers a more personalised experience through the application of digital tools.
  • Able to manage casher and digital payment transactions.
  • Examine the benefits of some primary examples of Digital Technology in Retail such as app-stores, QR codes, in-queue checkouts, smart vending machines, automated checkout, unmanned stores etc..
  • Become aware of what roles automation and AI are playing in retail industry and what the future of retail entails for oneself and customers.

Module-Specific Learner Skills

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Engage with fellow students in peer learning process to share own learning and development and assess and comment on progress of others in context of material being taught.

Module-Specific Digital Skills and Competences:

The learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to benefit from assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials etc.
  • Identify and navigate through social media platforms as applicable to retail settings to be able to advise customers on their options.
