Module Description

The module aims to provide qualified nurses with an introduction to the importance of research in nursing practice and the relationship between evidence-based practice (EBP) and patient safety and professional growth as a developing Registered Nurse.

This module helps students learn about and understand research results as a foundation for evidence-based practice.

Students will evaluate the effects of a research and evidence-based practices for understanding nursing phenomena, and apply this to understanding to upgrade nurse’s knowledge, attitudes, and performance in the healthcare settings.

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates who apply for this course must possess a qualification equivalent to a Higher Diploma (120 ECTS) in Nursing accredited at MQF 5. 
  • Preference will be given to prospective applicants having a year of work experience related to the study programme. 

 

Target Audience

  • This programme is targeted at nurses who are registered with the Council for Nurses and Midwives Malta and/or other registering bodies. 

Module / Unit Instructions

The proposed structure comprises a blended approach promoting the building of a community of practice via peer-to-peer learning. The structure uses primarily two dimensions of teaching-learning modes:

  • Face to Face sessions

Face-to-face sessions include lectures, tutorials, discussions, presentations and workshop activities promoting peer-to-peer learning.

  • Online Learning Activities

Online learning activities incorporate tutorials and asynchronous discussions. These may consist of active interaction, participation and contributions in fora discussions, sharing resources and self-reflection exercises. Learners also contribute to the building of the community of practice by providing feedback to their peers as critical friends, enhancing the learner’s critical engagement throughout the study period.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Formative Assessment
  • Summative Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the ability to, independently:

  • Apply knowledgeable opinion of the concept of ‘evidence’ in Nursing Professions.
  • Critically analyse the relevance of using evidence-based practices in decision-making in context of patience safety.
  • Critically analyse data from different point of views as they related to evidence-based practices in nursing profession.
  • Contextualise the role of systems in decision-making for nursing profession.
  • Critically assess awareness how data is contextualised and the ethical, social and health safety implications in the way it is adopted and used.
  • Process and evaluate data and other sources and forms of evidence nursing profession.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  • Introduction to Evidence-based Nursing Practice part 1.
  • Introduction to Evidence-based Nursing Practice part 2.
  • Critiquing the Evidence part 1.
  • Critiquing the Evidence part 2.
  • Systematic reviews, action research.
  • Making Change.

Skills :

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Critically apply hands-on practice to select best designs for specific questions as they related to evidence-based practices in nursing profession.
  • Critically evaluate approaches for evaluating evidence in nursing profession.
  • Appraise ways and means to collect, analyse and evaluate data in a more systematic and effective manner.
  • Assess critically the skills of analyses in decision making as they apply to nursing profession.

The learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials etc.
