Module Description

This module will dive into health and safety obligations and processes in the context of elderly care, including the implications and issues of safety from a personal point of view.

You will also explore a range of theoretical and case study approaches to help you better understand how to conduct a risk assessment, follow a care plan and learn different handling techniques and processes required for moving elderly persons safely.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess one of the following: 

  • a pass in English Language and Mathematics;  

 OR 

  •  a MQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (‘O’ Level or equivalent).                                                                                                                                                                  

Target Audience

This course is targeted at:

  • Candidates seeking a career and a formal qualification in elderly care;
  • Candidates who wish to progress in their studies along the Further and Higher Education route, whilst broadening their chances of advancing in their own career path.

Career Paths

  • This programme aims to prepare you to become a caregiver for elderly persons, in line with the National Occupational Standards for Elderly Care.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Identify professional roles and responsibilities relating to health and safety in elderly care.
  • Examine the implications and issues of safety from a person point of view.
  • Understand the legislation related to health and safety in the elderly care and how to apply it in elderly care.
  • Evaluate an importance of risk assessment and care plan in relation to health and safety of elderly.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Understand how to follow health and safety practices when working with elderly, their families and staff;
  • Identify implications and issues of safety from a person point of view;
  • Identify and discuss any differences in health and safety in the context of the international health care area;
  • Identify and discuss the policies and procedures for moving and handling of elderly persons;
  • Examine the case studies of different elderly care interventions in context of health and safety principles.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Apply health and safety principles and procedures in elderly care settings.
  • Skill presentation is recommended to be endorsed during placement.

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
  • Make use of technology and informatics available as necessary.
