Module Description

In order to maintain quality and safe care, you will need to know how to prevent and protect yourself and other stakeholders from infections and infectious diseases.

This module will introduce you to the basics of infection and prevention control knowledge and skills that are carried out routinely within all clinical settings.

This module focuses on the Maltese legislation related to the sector.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply must be in possession of at least one of the following:

 

  • a pass in English Language and Mathematics;

OR

  • an MQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

Target Audience

This course is targeted at:

  • Candidates seeking a career and a formal qualification in elderly care;
  • Candidates who wish to progress in their studies along the Further and Higher Education route, whilst broadening their chances of advancing in their own career path.

Career Paths

  • This programme aims to prepare you to become a caregiver for elderly persons, in line with the National Occupational Standards for Elderly Care.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Develop a sound body of theoretical knowledge underpinning a number of practice skills involved in infection prevention and control;
  • Follow policies, procedures, and tools regarding infection prevention and control;
  • Develop a basic awareness of the legal aspect in infection control practices;
  • Share information about infection control and prevention as relevant to all care settings and of the services offered in public health on infection control;
  • Adhere to outbreak management plans in case of a medical emergency.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Defining infectious diseases.
  • Types of infections e.g., viral, bacterial, fungal, others.
  • The Disease transmission Cycle, and modes of infection transmission.
  • Principles of epidemiology to environmental risk assessment.
  • The Development of a comprehensive infection prevention and control program.
  • Infection control data samples.
  • Management protocols of any outbreak.
  • Basic legal aspects.
  • Public services.
  • Policies and procedures re infection prevention and control.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Explain the infection control and prevention process according to standard procedures.
  • Describe the procedure to maintain hand hygiene and disinfected envelopment to avoid and prevent infection.
  • Provide and maintain a clean and disinfected caring environment free from hazards.
  • Use of personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) as applicable.

Module-Specific Digital Skills and Competences:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
  • Record, document and report all necessary information regarding infection control and prevention.
