Module Description

The module will offer participants a thorough understanding of Marketing and Sales as they apply to hospitality businesses. Participants will learn to apply key marketing principles to solve hospitality marketing problems and take advantage of new opportunities and changing market trends and conditions.

Beyond Marketing, the module will also introduce sales techniques that encourage the use of intuition, judgement, logic, problem solving methodology and other tools as part of the overall sales strategy. The emphasis in both marketing and sales will be on stressing differentiation from competitors by improving sales techniques and ability to generate revenue for the hotel, resort, or catering establishment.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess one of the following: 

  • a Level 6 degree and 3 years’ work experience;  

 

OR  

  • a Level 5 diploma or higher diploma and 5 years’ work experience in a supervisory or managerial role. 

 

Preference is given to applicants having a Level 6 degree in a discipline related hospitality and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in management within the industry. 

Target Audience

This course is targeted at hospitality professionals with supervisory and/or middle management experience such as:   

  • event manager/coordinator 
  • restaurant manager 
  • reception manager 
  • shift manager/supervisor  
  • marketing and sales manager  
  • guest services manager/supervisor 
  • housekeeping manager/supervisor 
  • special events manager 
  • room service manager 

The target group may also be extended to positions such as that of wedding manager, transport manager, maintenance manager, operations manager, marketing manager, conference manager and even that of general manager. 

Career Paths

This programme aims to prepare you for senior posts such as that of general manager, head of department or the events director of any hospitality organisation, such as cruise liners, hotels, spas, restaurants and casinos, amongst others.  

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Summative Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.
