Module Description

This module  focuses on the most commonly encountered mental health disorders among the elderly, such as depression, anxiety, and dementia.

This module explores the unique challenges and symptoms associated with these conditions in older adults.

It provides comprehensive insights into effective care strategies and interventions tailored to support patients with mental health disorders. Students will learn about diagnostic techniques, therapeutic approaches, and the importance of a holistic care model.

Emphasis is placed on understanding the psychosocial aspects and promoting mental well-being, ensuring students are equipped to offer compassionate and effective support to older adults.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply must be in possession of at least one of the following:

 

  • a pass in English Language and Mathematics;

OR

  • an MQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

Target Audience

This course is targeted at:

  • Candidates seeking a career and a formal qualification in elderly care;
  • Candidates who wish to progress in their studies along the Further and Higher Education route, whilst broadening their chances of advancing in their own career path.

Career Paths

  • This programme aims to prepare you to become a caregiver for elderly persons, in line with the National Occupational Standards for Elderly Care.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Affective, Schizophrenic, Anxiety and Personality disorders,  their treatment and care giving.
  • Cognitive impairment.
  • Dementia characteristics, treatment and care giving.
  • Psychiatry of old age.
  • Learning disabilities, Epilepsy and the concept of normalisation.
  • Risk management and skills for a psychiatric emergency.
  • Safety measures in a mental health setting.
  • Key components and characteristics in enhancing therapeutic relationships.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Contemporary Dynamics in Patient-centered relationships.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Develop a positive rehabilitative attitude thus facilitating re-integration into the community of the people with mental health according to the Maltese ethical and legal frameworks.
  • Examine the key components and characteristics in enhancing examples of therapeutic relationships.
  • Be able to have an understanding of the importance of having the appropriate management skills in risk and/or a psychiaric emergency.
  • Be able to have an understanding of the importance of having the appropriate skills to apply safety procedures in a mental health setting.
  • Be able to have an understanding of the importance of having the appropriate team response and team referral procedures in crisis situations in a mental health setting.

Judgment Skills and Critical Abilities:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the benefits and implications of therapeutic practices in mental health care of elderly.
  • Recognise the differences in beliefs and cultural practices in mental health care practices.

  • Understand the importance of having different and appropriate communication skills to communicate with specialists and non-specialists.
