Module Description

In this module, students will increase their knowledge and skills to enhance a elderly wellbeing when suffering from developmental and physical disability.

The students will learn how to act as a link between the elderly, the family and the interdisciplinary team.

The module aims to cover different developmental and physical abilities while looking at the role of the health care professional in patient advocacy through a holistic care approach and well-being of the elderly.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply must be in possession of at least one of the following:

 

  • a pass in English Language and Mathematics;

OR

  • an MQF Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

Target Audience

This course is targeted at:

  • Candidates seeking a career and a formal qualification in elderly care.
  • Candidates who wish to progress in their studies along the Further and Higher Education route, whilst broadening their chances of advancing in their own career path.

Career Paths

  • This programme aims to prepare you to become a caregiver for elderly persons, in line with the National Occupational Standards for Elderly Care.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of different physical and developmental disabilities in elderly.
  • Develop a holistic approach to elderly care and support to elders towards self care and independence.
  • Promote self care and independence depending on the needs of the elders.
  • Manage activity of daily living.
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of having advocacy skills for the elderly with developmental and physical disabilities and their family in conjunction with the interdiscplinary team.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Physical and developmental disabilities.
  • Patient education: independency, autonomy, self-management, self-ownership and responsibility, health, healthy behaviour, others.
  • Empowering and Motivating the elderly with special needs, their families, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Public and Community Services to support elderly in maintaining a good quality of life.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Explain information on help services available to elderly with physical and developmental disabilities in the community.
  • Discuss different ways of assisting elders in their physical mobility depending on the need.
  • Document elders’ records on appropriate forms / database.
  • To be able to evaluate elder’s limitations and assist in acquiring the patients maximum potential.
  • Advocate for the elders with developmental and physical disabilities and their family together with the interdisciplinary team.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Select the best appropriate way of assisting the elders depending on the special needs.

At the end of the module/unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to find, download, and upload assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials, etc.
