Module Description

The module aims to examine the role that strategy plays in setting the course and direction of retail entity.

The module offers students an opportunity to develop understanding of the strategic challenges facing companies in the retail sector and the strategy planning processes that help navigate through the decision-making process.

Students will also develop comprehensive understanding of corporate governance, ethics and social responsibility and their relationship with retail strategy. 

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course will possess:

  • A qualification at MQF Level 4 (one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject) and a pass in English Language and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Assessment 1
  • Assessment 2

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Describe the process of strategic management;
  • Develop comprehensive understanding of design, development, adaptation and implementation of strategy;
  • Relate how organisational culture influences strategy formulation and management;
  • Examine possible opportunities that can arise from strategic planning;
  • Be able to apply PESTEL and Porter’s 5-forces models.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  • Explain what retail strategy is and the role of strategic management in retail context;
  • Develop comprehensive understanding of corporate governance, ethics and social responsibility and its relation to retail strategy;
  • Discuss the implications of strategy on internal and external affairs;
  • List some key controllable and uncontrollable variables that should be considered when creating an overall retail strategy.

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Analyse and apply the processes for Strategic Retail Planning as appropriate;
  • Assess how governance, social, and ethical aspects influence retail strategy development;
  • Review the key factors for the success and failure of strategy as it applies to retailing context;
  • Recommend tactical solutions when change in strategic direction takes place due to external and internal affairs effecting the retail organisation.
