Module Description

This module provides the participants with an overview of the principles and practices of visual merchandising and display handling.

Although the content focuses primarily on visual merchandising within a traditional retail environment, much of the content is also relevant in other art and design-based contexts, such as exhibition/interior design and ecommerce-related web design.

This module covers practical aspects of visual merchandising including the proper use of store layout, lighting, the launching of sales campaigns, and arranging effective eye-catching displays.

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess a pass in English Language* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent). 

  • Students whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency.

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.

Learning Outcomes

Competences:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to:

  • Be able to choose, dress and style mannequins when designing displays;
  • Recommend how to use store layout and lighting to make merchandise more appealing to the customer;
  • Create the various kinds of internal and external displays using the principles underlying good display design;
  • Advise on fixtures and fittings to construct eye-catching displays.

Knowledge:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have been exposed to the following:

  • Defining Visual Merchandising.
  • Why visual merchandising is important and effective in selling products.
  • Identifying Principles of Putting Displays Together.
  • Mannequins.
  • Stands and Other Store Fixtures Used in Visual Merchandising.
  • Planning Store Layouts.
  • Visual Merchandising and Effective Sales and Clearance Campaigns.

 

Skills:

At the end of the module/unit the learner will have acquired the following skills:

  • Apply the Four Elements of Visual Merchandising.
  • Use signs, symbols and mannequins and other props to bring customers attention to a sale and promotion.
  • Be able to utilise platforms and elevations to show off store merchandise.
  • Dress, care for and store mannequins appropriately.
  • Identify and recommend the fixtures used in visual merchandising and the way in which a product or line of products is best displayed to ensure the success of sales.

At the end of the module/unit the learner will be able to:

  • Engage with fellow students in peer learning process to share own learning and development and assess and comment on progress of others in context of material being taught.

  • Navigate through the online learning platform to benefit from assignments, discussion boards, literature, tutorials etc
