Course Description

This course serves as a qualifying program for the M.Sc. in Construction Management. The construction industry and its related projects are highly-complex requiring skilled management of scope, costs, time-frames and quality in line with various pieces of legislation.  These projects also typically involve a very broad range of stakeholders, from the neighbouring community, to owners, contractors, workers and more and consequently require effective stakeholder management.

The construction manager requires the skills and knowledge to be able to oversee all of these factors, ensuring that a construction is executed in a smooth and efficient manner whilst effectively taking safety and environment issues as well as other applicable legal frameworks into consideration.

This course  will address related construction project processes, legal aspects, management skills, health and safety legislation and environmental and sustainability issues.

The overall course objective is that of getting construction managers to meet professional standards in this challenging and highly visible line of work. This is being achieved by:

  • Informing course participants about latest laws, regulations and relevant standards.
  • Presenting course participants with practical scenarios that illustrate how professional construction project managers are expected to act.
  • Ensuring that course participants fully appreciate the risks and are able to assess and manage different types of risk.
  • Getting course participants to fully understand the environmental impacts of this profession.
  • Instilling a culture of respect and ethical behaviour.

 

Entry Requirements

Candidates who wish to apply for the Award must possess the following:

  • a full qualification at MQF Level 5 with 120 ECTS in a discipline related to this programme.

Candidates who wish to apply for the Level 6 Award must possess the following:

  • a qualification at MQF Level 5 in a discipline related to this programme;

OR

any other qualification at MQF Level 5 and 3 years’ work experience within the construction industry.

In the case of mature students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the RPL process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted in the course. Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA Academy, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.

  • Professionals within the construction sector with a full level 5 qualification in construction-related studies seeking to achieve an Award in Construction Management (Leading to M.Sc. in Construction Management)
  • Professionals within the construction sector seeking professional and academic advancement leading to a Level 6 Award.

Modules

You are required to complete all 5 compulsory modules (30 ECTS), to fulfil the requirements for the Qualifying Program M.Sc. in Construction Management.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Project Assessment

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules. 

Assessment of Project 

  • Depth of critical understanding of the theoretical framework.
  • Application of appropriate research tools.
  • Critical approach to analysis, interpretation and evaluation of research findings.
  • Depth and level of argumentation build-up.
  • Original contribution to the generation of new knowledge/hypothesis/models.
  • Scholarly presentation meeting academic standards.

The learner will be able to:

  • Define the required management, legal and ethical skills, roles and responsibilities of a construction manager.
  • Identify the different roles and responsibilities of the construction project stakeholders demonstrating understanding of all phases and types of construction projects and the roles and expectations of the stakeholders involved.
  • Identify the list of National Occupational Standards (NOS) relevant to the construction industry.
  • Analyse and describe the impact of legislation and standards on construction projects and the means by which compliance of a construction project and health and safety can be assured.
  • Define various contract models applicable to the construction sector and the impact of each on the management of the related project.
  • Identify and describe the quality and procurement systems, procedures and standards for construction projects.
  • Describe the various elements associated with project management within the context of a construction project.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of various tools and methodologies for managing scope, time, cost and quality of all facets and phases of the construction works.

For Skills:

The learner will be able to:

  • Apply various methodologies for managing scope, time, cost and quality within the context of a variety of construction project types and across all project phases.
  • Able to manage a team of professionals necessary to manage a complex construction project.
  • Be able to address stakeholder needs within a variety of construction contexts.
  • Evaluate how health and safety legislation and other construction related legislation influences working practices in the construction industry and be able to apply this knowledge in a construction settings to safeguard construction health and safety and ensure compliance with all applicable rules.
  • Apply the methodologies related to environmental management needed to comply with environmental management obligations applicable to construction projects.
  • Apply various procurement models and procedures in context of various construction projects.
  • Solve problems, retrieve information and make effective use of construction project, contract and risk management processes and procedures as these apply to constructions projects, including processes for progression and monitoring of the construction works.
  • Apply the management and leadership skills required to manage the project workforce and work effectively in a multi-disciplinary setting and multi-cultural construction organisations.
  • Communicate more effectively with peers and stakeholders.
