Course Description

The programme will focus on providing theoretical concepts and specific skills associated with service businesses in hospitality. It will cover overarching areas, such as operations, finance, health and safety, work ethics, communication, customer care, supervisory skills, and consumer behaviour. Student will also learn about innovation and contemporary issues related to hospitality in order to gain an in-depth understanding of this industry.

The first year of the programme focuses on providing students with a solid foundation of the underlying principles in Hospitality. Students will undertake study units in Hospitality Operations, Principles of Customer Care, Hospitality Health and Safety, and Consumer Behaviour and Marketing, among others.

The second year of the programme builds on the knowledge of the first year and delves into academic writing, critical thinking and communication, and principles of tourism. Students will also be exposed to knowledge and skills in Event Management, Travel Geography, and Research Methods. Beyond the core units, students will undertake a project, hence get the opportunity to focus on a particular area that is of interest to them as well as acquiring skills in project planning.

The final year consolidates on the first two years of the programme. Students will have an opportunity to further develop their critical skills and deepen their knowledge of complex issues surrounding the hospitality and the travel and tourism industry. Learners will obtain knowledge on sustainable tourism, tourism law and policy, cross-cultural communication, and the diverse interests of tourists.

Besides solidifying their knowledge regarding important topics in hospitality, this qualification also promotes the development of transversal skills in students through modules such as Academic Writing and Critical Thinking and Communication. Furthermore, this programme consolidates

Entry Requirements

Candidates who apply for this course must possess:

  • A qualification at MQF Level 4 (one ‘A’ Level or equivalent in any subject) and a pass in English Language* and Mathematics at MQF Level 3 (‘O’ Level or equivalent).

In the case of students who do not possess all the formal required academic qualifications, then the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process could be applied such that if evidence of equivalent learning is found then the applicant could still be accepted on the course. Such RPL process will subject applicants to an interview held with a board of experts within the field, chosen specifically by IDEA College, so as to verify their experiences and prior learning.

Evidence may include:

  • A detailed CV outlining relevant work experience and responsibilities.
  • Employer reference letters outlining job role, duration, and key competencies.
  • Related documentation demonstrating relevant skills (e.g. work portfolio).

How you’ll be assessed

The course comprises:

  • Evening classes for part-time courses.
  • Classes held throughout the day for full-time courses.
  • Guided learning, presentations, comprising synchronous online discussions, tutorials and/or videos.
  • Self-study hours comprising research, reading and assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out via two mandatory components:

  • Modular Assessment
  • Dissertation

The programme includes different forms of assessment which allow for and promote students’ critical engagement. The formative and summative assessment tasks may include an in-class assignment and/or a home-based written assignment using diverse assessment tools which may take the form of online and in-class discussions, examinations, case studies, reports, proposals, essays, and presentations, etc., as applicable to the diverse modules.
